I desire very much to become amazing at environments! I think my problem is is that
I'm too sterile in my process. I can't just paint on top of a sketch, I gotta like
use line tools and stretch and distort the walls until things look too crisp and clean
SIGH I don't know

look at me using imageshack like a common PEASANT

haha

THIS.

I've never been so 'guh'-ed by a picture before in my life!

That's a place I want to escape to. Is the tree a cupboard or a hiding place or what? It all looks great. :)

I like to think that the bottom most cupboard on the tree has umbrellas and gloves in there. The rest have secret candy stashes

i actually think that the fact that you are so clean and precise in your environments really adds to the style that you draw in
it's a style! you don't have to do it like everyone else :)
frankly, i think your landscapes and rooms are the best i've ever seen

also i want to live there. ahaha

Gorgeous room and sketches - I think that you'll get a handle on it, btw... gotta learn all of the technical skills first, then you bend the rules and make it more organic. You're doing such an amazing job - you're a real pro, you know.

In fact, when I eventually start getting books together, can I recommend they contact you for artwork? ;) I mean, they usually don't listen to an author's advice about that kind of thing anyway, but if they happen to ask for recommendations.... :D

Your backgrounds/environments are just getting more and more stunning with each post. I'm still not over your amazing Halloween Dream pictures, lol~ What program(s) do you usually use to create your work, if you don't mind my asking?

Speaking as someone working on interior environments at work right now, I think using a ruler and tweaking things to get the perspective right is perfectly fine- usually you can do loose sketches to figure out where things are gonna be, sure, but when you're drawing perpendicular lines with wonky perspective, trust me- it looks horrible. :D

That makes Barbie's Dream House look like a pile of maggots and old peas! Love it, especially the molding around the doors-gorgeous!

Also, I'm pretty sure "spider mooms" is going to feature in my nightmares this weeks, so thanks for that.

Man wouldn't it be nice to draw backgrounds in the same organic way figures are drawn? I draw a figure and I know the FLOW, you know? I just can't get that with backgrounds or buildings. My mind just says "BOXES, all I see are BOXES! Does not COMPUTE!"
I have to say I would like to live in that place you have there.

Exactly!! I was sketching some rooms, and all I could think of is "why can't rooms have anatomy!!"
But thats the thing, some artists have gotten SO GOOD at making a room flow and look so natural, like it's a living thing. It's so amazing when it's done right!

If you're worried about being too "sterile" with your digital environments, try just sketchng them out in pencil, or better yet, an ink brush. The ink brush especially forces you to be kinda sloppier, **and it's just plain fun :D
But my opinion? You're environments are fine. You have a real knack for it, it's something not a lot of people can successfully pull off. You always have a great sense of color and environment. That's an "A" from me.

And those head studies towards the bottom are faaaaaaab. I'm a big dorkus for seeing the more experimental/devolopment stuff

Daaw thanks, peaches! Inks are a good idea, I have been liking my inky pens lately and I never thought to try an environment with 'em

I was sketchin' heads from this website, which I love!

the only thing that seems sterile to me is the floor, it just seems a little too shiny

though i am absolutely in love with the top corner where the tree meets the ceiling; basically just that corner of the room seems so life like and awesomely quirky to me!

Pfft, your style is so nice and clean! Mine's like that too, and I haven't been able to escape it either.

One thing I've noticed with your stuff is things are usually very clean-cut and shiny. Why don't ya try some different brushes in Photoshop and see what they do? Also have you tried drawing the environments in pencil and scanning them in and colouring over that? My backgrounds always turn out better if I do them in my sketchbook first and build on top of that. I guess being able to actually touch the work helps or something.

that floor is GORGEOUS. The reflections and all that, looks so real aaah did you do the wood grain and everything? That is sooo impressive.

Also love the stucco-ish walls, and the birds on the back wall! Thats the kind of place I would like to live, or have as a studio. :) The huge windows!
